How does a lava lamp work?

Lava lamps come in various sizes and designs but all of them recreate the magic of the flow of molten lava in a controlled environment. A lava lamp has viscous and coloured fluids, paraffin wax and a lamp that can either be an incandescent, halogen or even an LED bulb. The fluids have varying coefficient of expansion and density and when the lamp is lighted the wax melts slowly rising to the top of the lamp. It cools slightly at the top and sinks back to the bottom. This process is repeated time and again, creating the unique shapes in the water.

Shapes and colours

Lava lamps come in various shapes and colours like orange, red, blue, green, rainbow etc to suit your personality and the space where they are to be kept.

Precautions

Do not shake the lamp once the wax is molten as it may lead to emulsification of the fluids. It would result in the fluid turning from clear to cloudy.  Some recombination does take place as part of the normal cycle and the only way by which the whole wax will again take the shape of a single blob is to switch off the lamp. The absence of heat over a period of some hours will result in the wax settling at the bottom in a single blob.

Always remember that a lava lamp operates at high temperatures so the glass globe and base become hot and requires time to cool off after it has been switched off.

Never place the lamp in direct sunlight. It will result in fading of colours.

Planning the world’s tallest lamp

A small town in central Washington, Soap Lake is trying to build the world’s largest lava lamp since the early 2000s in a bid to revive its dwindling economic fortunes.

Soap Lake was a prominent spa  resort of the early 20th century  as the water in the town and nearby areas was rich with minerals. This water was said to be particularly helpful  for  patients suffering from Buerger’s disease affecting many World War I veterans.

The Soap Lake lava lamp is to be a 60 feet high lava lamp and the town hopes that the illuminated lamp will bring tourists back to this town nestled in a region that has beautiful basalt deposits.
